Understanding the Instagram Algorithm
Melissa Fraistat, Social Media Coordinator at ngagency
Navigating the ever-changing instagram algorithm can feel like a full time job, but don’t fret, we’re here to help breakdown exactly how it works.
According to Instagram, the “algorithm relies on ‘signals’ based on how you interact with the app, and how other people interact with you.” These signals also affect how you show up on other people’s feeds, meaning the other content users engage with (the content they like, comment on, etc.) determines how often your posts will appear to them. To increase your likelihood of showing up on other people’s feeds Instagram recommends a few simple tips:
Play to your audience and their niche
Post in popular formats, like Reels
Tag a location
Invite people to engage
Additionally, Instagram recommends a few general rules to abide by:
Don’t spread misinformation
Follow their Community Guidelines
Avoid back-to-back posts to get a better ranking
As a general rule of thumb, we recommend to our clients to stick to a once-a-day posting schedule. Of course things may come up and more than one post may need to go up on a certain day, so we try to space out the posts throughout the day so multiple pieces of content are not put up at the same time to avoid a low ranking.
